Prioritising cyber security within Lely is therefore something I embrace as much as I embrace digital developments. We have a duty to protect ourselves and our business continuity. But not just ourselves: our farmers also deserve the best protection against 'the evil outside world' as digitalisation becomes increasingly important in dairy farming.
So lock the door of your house properly when you leave and take another look at what kind of key you use. Let’s pass on the best key to our customers, so that they too can rely on a safe house in which to run their business. That is also part of being 'farming innovators', and something that will help make life easier for dairy farmers.
I embrace these developments and can see how they make our lives and work so much easier. A generation is growing up that cannot imagine life without digital tools. Clearly, we will be changing at a very fast pace whilst learning to live with these possibilities and with the associated risks.
This growing dependence makes us more vulnerable. It’s important that we protect ourselves against digital threats. At Lely, we’ve experienced first-hand how disruptive that vulnerability can be. And that is not diminishing as we grow.
Whether they could have foreseen how digitalisation would conquer the world and also dairy farming, I don't know. But the fact is that today we can’t live without it. Our lives take place largely in our mobile devices, where our private and business lives increasingly blend together. The Covid-19 pandemic has accelerated this trend: work now also takes place to a greater extent in the online world. ‘Teamsing’ is an accepted verb and 'sharing is caring' has taken on extra meaning as a result of far-reaching collaboration in 'the cloud'.
Add to that the possibilities opened up by Artificial Intelligence. It will make our work even faster and more intelligent. Do I need to write my column myself or will ChatGPT take over in the near future...?
When my father and my uncle launched their first machine after World War II, they had a clear vision: to make the farmer's life easier and help feed the world's growing population. In this, they were way ahead of their time. Back in the 1970s, they came up with a solution to add value to manure. Circular farming way before the discussion on sustainability even started.
