Finally, do you have any fun anecdotes on cyber security and the campaigns being run?

Hendrik Harm: 'Just before the start of the Lely Center event during the anniversary week in June, we sent out a phishing mail to all attendees. In it, they were invited to come and pick up a new iPhone. The link in that e-mail was clicked dozens of times and it became part of the cyber security-related conversation at the event. At the same time, it gave us valuable conversations precisely because of that. It proves that we are taking the right steps in terms of awareness, but that we now have to take action to protect the continuity of our company together.'

Won’t measures like Modern Workplace restrict us in our freedom and our ability to innovate?

Martijn: ‘Making ourselves more digitally resilient does not mean things are no longer possible. All kinds of things are still possible. We are working together to become more aware of the fact that the door has to be locked when you leave, but if you have the right key, you can just go in.'

'With Modern Worplace we aim for the highest (digital) security standards to protect our valuable company data and knowledge from IT-related threats and risks'

About Hendrik Harm

  • Retrained in IT with a specialisation in cyber security within the government. Gained experience in various security roles such as forensic investigator, digital investigation team coordinator and set up a Security Operations Centre

  • Joined Lely in October 2022 and has fulfilled the role of Head of Cyber Security Center since 1 September 2023

About Martijn

  • Started his career as a trainer at Philips, and later became responsible for logistics, IT and production in the Netherlands and Germany

  • Has worked at Lely for 25 years, where he is the longest-serving board member. He started as deputy director for production and then moved up to general manager of Lely Industries, among various other positions, and has been Chief Technology Officer at Lely for four years

  • Martijn had no background in the dairy sector, so he was regularly surprised by the success and failure of innovations in his first 10 years at Lely. This partly explains why he is convinced of the power of employing so many colleagues with farming backgrounds and expertise

Since September, you have been responsible for cyber security within Lely. What are employees – and our farmers – going to notice?

Martijn: 'I think that over the next six months – regardless of whether you work on Campus or at one of our Cluster or Center locations – everyone is going to notice that we are becoming stricter in terms of cyber security. We can no longer afford all the freedoms we were used to before. When you leave your house, you don't leave all the doors open because when you get home it's nice to be able to walk straight inside.'

Hendrik Harm: 'You see an increasing threat. Many news articles appear about companies being hacked – a threat that, unfortunately, has not passed us by either. We are talking about a real risk against which we need to protect ourselves and we should not underestimate the – very professionally organised – attackers. In this protection, we also see an important role for the Centers in properly educating our customers – the farmers. They are in daily contact with the farmer and can give eminently useful tips – such as not making personal use of the farm computer that operates the robots. It is up to us – as the cyber security team – to give them the right tools to engage with the farmer.'

'Why is cyber security so important to Lely? For the same reason you lock the door in the morning when you leave the house’. Martijn Boelens, Chief Technology Officer (CTO), and Hendrik Harm Zuid, Head of Cyber Security Center, in conversation on the importance of cyber security – and the difference you as an employee can make in it. 'We even have an additional responsibility towards our customers, the farmers. They do not always have the knowledge and expertise to assess the risks properly. They must be able to count on us to do so'.

What can I change tomorrow to make a difference by increasing Lely’s digital resilience?

Martijn: 'Also go through your systems and the applications you use in your private environment. Check whether you can turn on two-factor authentication. In a lot of systems – including those you use for private purposes – you have the option to turn it on. Do so, because you are more vulnerable than you think.'

Hendrik Harm: 'It all starts with the mindset of being open to the necessary changes and the willingness of all of us to go along with it. We are doing this together and we need everyone. A project like Modern Workplace will take some getting used to at the beginning, but I invite everyone to seize the opportunities it offers. In addition, we must all stay alert. Most attacks still start by e-mail. Be alert to e-mails from unknown senders or strange links. In addition, do not use your work computer for private purposes, keep them separate. That applies to everyone at all sites, even our farmers!'

'Our farmers must be able to count on our knowledge and expertise'
