Bye bye

👋

18:30

Take the long way home

Well, not exactly of course, although it's definitely a bit later than planned, but hey ... the weather is good, no traffic jams and some good music in the car. Dinner here I come, or in good Dutch 'Op het gemakkie naar mijn prakkie!'

Help is on the Horizon

A farmer in Terheijde calls me after experiencing slowness in typing in Horizon. The problem is not so much in Horizon but in a Windows update that is already downloading for installation, so it’s solved in no time!

I notice that a colleague of mine, Marcel Groot, is also working on this test farm. I ask him if he needs any help and, before I know it, I’m ‘knee-deep in cow dung’, replacing a flap around the suction mouth. Not specifically IT-related, but that's exactly what makes working in this team so much fun!

15:30

Network spaghetti

At a test park in Oudenbosch, I need to rearrange some network cables and power connections to make this traffic point more reliable. I find out that one of the plugs on a switch is making a bad connection. The switch has to be replaced. I make sure the switches are properly attached, rearrange the cables and test the network. Everything is up and running again. Good to go!

14:00

Moo, you’re on camera!

Off to my first appointment at a test farm in Krabbendijke, about an hour's drive away. Together with a good colleague of mine, Paul Hulsen, we’re going to install some cameras to monitor the behaviour of heifers being milked at the robot for the first time. This requires the installation of network cables, making a 'MacGyver-like' construction as a 'cow-proof' mount for the camera. After testing everything, I go on to the next appointment.

10:00

The workday begins

After breakfast and feeding Olly, we go for a walk, always a good start to the day. Back home I pour myself a second cup of tea and go upstairs to start up my laptop. It’s 08:30 and the workday begins. First, I check my mail for important messages. Then I notice some logs are missing from a test farm. After logging in remotely with TeamViewer I’m able to fix the problem.

08:30
07:30

It’s the police!

‘Roooooxanneeee, you don’t have to put on the … click’ and before Sting finishes shouting this line from an all-time classic by The Police, I hit the "alarm off" button. 07:30 A new day.

After putting on my clothes, I head downstairs where our dog Olly is very happy to see me (because she knows she’s getting food, of course). I make breakfast and a lunch for the road as I have two scheduled appointments at our test farms today.

Hi, my name is Ronald Pieterse. I joined Lely in October 2021 at Product Development as a Test Service Engineer IT. I am 57 years young and together with my wife Sylvia and daughter Lyndsey I live in Delft, the Netherlands.

My main responsibility at Lely is to ensure that all hardware used to collect logs of new innovations and technologies on test farms is installed and maintained. So, on a daily basis, I make sure that the logs collected by the hardware are complete and that they are sent and received correctly.

In my free time, I enjoy watching F1 and soccer matches. I like to go hiking and shoot some arrows. I also like to make cool music dance mixes.

Today I’m going to take you into a workday in my life. Will you join me?
