With app. 250 new Lely employees receiving 45 contract pages per person, only Lely International will save 11,250 pages of paper yearly. So there’s much potential for savings next year.

HR takes paper to task. The payroll has been completely digitised during the past year, so it’s no longer necessary to print folders full of changes, and the finance audit is carried out digitally. Employment contracts and employer statements are now only sent digitally. During the coming year, work will be carried out on digital signatures, which will make it possible to organise most documentation online. HR is reducing paper consumption to a bare minimum with these measures.

At the internal launch of Lely's sustainability programme, we asked you to share your sustainability initiatives and ambitions. A lot of great ideas found their way to our inbox. From small to large, from the obvious (you just have to do it) to the ingenious, and from the immediately doable to a plan for the future. They all share one thing in common – they make a big difference when added together. We’re sharing the top-four sustainable ideas and initiatives submitted below. We hope they inspire you!

Sustainability ideas

Looks like a small impact, but imagine what difference we would make if everyone came up with such an idea? It’s all about thinking carefully about what we do and how we do it.

Another small, but smart idea: use velcro cable wraps, instead of plastic disposable tie wraps, to secure cables when exchanging electronic parts. This reduces the use of single-use plastic, because you don't have to use a new tie wrap each time.

At Lely we already try to recycle and reuse as many cans as possible. We expect to recycle or reuse 320,000 plastic cans in 2021.

Several colleagues suggested there were opportunities to make the packaging of consumables more sustainable, such as by using refillable packaging, recycling packaging, or using paper or plant-based tape on packaging. Other ideas were to use honeycomb cardboard instead of plastic air cushions to protect the contents of boxes, and to recover the water and chemicals used to clean the Astronaut to limit the environmental impact. Each and every one of these great ideas merit further investigation.

Sustainable packaging

The average Dutch person consumes about 38,5 litres of milk yearly. In the Netherlands switching to milk from the tap completely would save about 674 million (litre) cartons or bottles per year.

Helene Vijverberg, our TSS Expert, is extremely frustrated about the amount of packaging material in supermarkets. In response, she often buys her fruit and vegetables separately or in reusable bags, and bakes biscuits herself more often, just to name a few examples. However, she’s unable to find a sustainable alternative for milk cartons and bottles that are currently available in supermarkets. This inspired her to come up with a solution: MyMilk on tap – a milk tap in the supermarket, from which customers can fill or refill their own glass bottle. This kind of tap can sometimes be found at dairy farms, but placing them in the supermarket would appeal to a much larger customer base. Imagine how much impact we could make with this!

Good to know...

The colleagues who put forward an initiative or ambition have been invited to a round table session to see how we can implement their plans, and help us think about how Lely can structurally stimulate and implement sustainability. We’ll let you know about all the follow-up steps in the near future. If you’d like to join in, or if you have a good idea, send an e-mail to sustainability@lely.com. And don't hesitate to get in touch if you think you can contribute to one of the ambitions or initiatives below. We’ll gladly set you up with the right person.
