Life at the Cluster

Twelve countries means twelve different languages (and local dialects) and cultural behaviours. Some countries are surrounded by water, some by mountains or many lakes, some have poor infrastructure. Have you ever heard us say that life is boring at our Cluster?

In Denmark, working at the office, working from home or being out visiting the Lely Center, customers and other organisations has been in the mix for years. To maintain the connection with colleagues, many try to plan to be at the Cluster office once a week, or every two weeks. And then there’s the challenge to stay connected with the colleagues who don’t live in Denmark. Obviously, due to Covid-19 during the past two years, this has mostly been online. So people are eager to meet each other again.

GREETINGS FROM

Northern facts
  • Denmark is part of the North East Cluster.
  • This Cluster covers the Nordic countries, Baltic region, Poland, Czech, Slovakia and south to Hungary. There are twelve countries, with 23 Lely Centers, in total.
  • North East has two Cluster locations: one in Poland with 22 colleagues, and one in Denmark with 31 colleagues.
  • The twelve countries are all very different and the markets also operate differently. Even in some of the countries, for example in Poland, there are large regional differences.
  • In Denmark (and also Sweden), Lely introduced the Astronaut in 1998. So here, Lely has more than 20 years’ experience.
Denmark
Lely in Denmark
  • 1,500 Lely Astronauts
  • 100,000 cows milked by Lely
  • 3.3 Astronaut in average per ‘Lely farm’
  • +33kg milk per cow in average at ‘Lely farms’
  • Three Lely Centers (all opened January 2007)

Danish dairy facts

  • 555,000 dairy cows
  • 2,300 milk producing farms
  • Steady increase in farm size
  • Steady increase in milk yield per cow
  • Few tie-stall systems still in operation, most herds are now loose housed
Market trends

Danish milk producers are increasingly focused on long-term relationships with reliable suppliers. The Lely structure, with support and service including the Lely Centers, is a good solution and is also why we are seeing a growth in sales of Lely Astronauts again.

Some years ago, the agricultural business experienced a heavy financial crisis and many dairy farmers either sold up or were bankrupted. Today most dairy businesses are stable. Farmers are increasingly becoming more professional and progressive, and looking for a good return on their investment. They are also considering how sustainable an investment is and what other benefits an investment can offer.

Challenges

The environmental demands in Denmark are increasing and the political agenda is becoming more complex and challenging for farmers to comply with. Issues such as carbon footprint and environmental impact – and more specifically optimum use of energy, water and detergents – are high on the agenda when we talk to our customers.

And, animal welfare, including for example cows grazing, and emissions from farms are also hot topics. So the launch of Lely Sphere is of great interest to the Danish market and we have high expectations. We now have a validation farm in Denmark using the Sphere, and we are looking forward to seeing the results on how much emissions can be lowered, and if there are any other benefits. Data and documentation of the Sphere is vital to get it on the ‘white list’ of technologies to lower emissions.

Adoption of automation

The level of automation differs enormously from country to country. In countries with a high adoption rate for automatic milking, we try to increase the market share and want to improve the adoption rate for feeding. This is because, in feeding, Lely still has a relatively low market share. In the countries with lower adoption rates for automation, it is about increasing awareness about automation and the Lely products.

So we can say that we are having a very good year in 2021. We hope you’ve enjoyed reading about our beautiful country.
