FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Chairman of the Supervisory Board & Shareholder
We have all had to adapt a lot lately. Working and meeting each other is now largely done online. Naturally, we also apply this new way of working in the Supervisory Board. I am very happy that our team has been complete since this summer. With varied experiences, we ensure that Lely remains a healthy family business in the future. John Quist, for example, has extensive experience in working for family businesses and Dirk de Groot has substantial knowledge of IT and digital transformation. Lisbet Tyge Frandsen has a lot of international experience, specifically in mechanical engineering. Finally, my contribution is my knowledge of innovation and agriculture. A valuable combination! Now it is up to us to find our way of working together with the Executive Board.
Dear Colleagues,
Future of food
As you know, together with Karel van den Berg, I am also focusing on sustainable food production. The corona virus is creating more demand for locally produced food. Interest in pure products and their traceability, but also the independence of global logistics and the realisation of a green footprint food. The Lely Orbiter is of course a wonderful example. It is great that Mijn Melk has more and more sales outlets in the Netherlands and the product offering is expanded with semi-skimmed milk.
One aspect that Karel and I are currently looking at is the urgent need for efficiently produced proteins for humans. It is expected that in 2050, the increased world population will require 30-50% more proteins. In the Western world we eat too much animal proteins, which can be partly replaced by vegetable proteins. We are now looking into the possibilities that crops offer to make this important nutrient available to humans.
Growing our facilities
A development from a different nature is the construction of our new and sustainable facilities in Pella and Maassluis. Lely North America recently celebrated the start of the construction of their new office and factory from a different site In Pella. The new location will offer them the opportunity to further growth in North America. And the expansion of the Lely Campus in Maassluis is closely followed by many employees and interested parties. The piling has been completed and the first contours of the building are already visible. By investing in these facilities, we are prepared for Lely's continued growth.
Passion for family businesses
And talking about the future, I am proud of the new direction of Lely Kits. Together with Gevasol, the activities are expanded under the new name 'GoDare'. Has van den Kieboom gives an inspiring implementation to this programme. The aim is to inspire more young people between the ages of 5 and 25 to make use of technology and to trigger entrepreneurship in them. As a shareholder of Lely, I think it is very important that we continue to pay attention to this.
In short; I´m fully occupied with the future!
GoDare
Did you know that family businesses in the Netherlands alone, account for half of the business activity? Family businesses are also of great value to the economy in other countries. I have recently become active as a board member at FBNed; Family businesses in the Netherlands. One of the goals of this organisation is to bring the interests of family businesses to the attention of politicians. This role allows me to use my passion for the future of family businesses.
