We do this not only by bringing innovations to market, but also by considering other, even more sustainable ways of farming. One great example is regenerative farming. How can soil quality be improved, while maintaining production levels and ensuring a fair livelihood for the farmer?

Additionally, which alternative revenue streams can we develop with and for farmers – not only to maintain their income levels, but also to further improve the circularity of their farms? Think of on-farm milk processing with the Orbiter, for instance. And there’s a world still to be explored when it comes to valorising manure.

Although sustainability is already deeply embedded in our DNA, I welcome the growing emphasis on it from an environmental, social and governance (ESG) perspective too. Together, we share the responsibility to support our farmers in all that they do, and to help them take the right steps towards the future. A future in which they can continue to do what they have done for centuries: provide the world’s population with milk for dairy products. We need our farmers – today and tomorrow.

Let us embrace sustainability in both our thinking and our actions, every single day.

That idea remains very much alive and is woven into our company philosophy. Just look at the Farm of the Future. All five impact areas link back to sustainable farming: running a business with care for animals and the planet, a sustainable revenue model for the farmer, sustainably produced dairy, and consumer trust in what the farmer does. In a changing world, much of this buy-in can be achieved through sustainable farming methods.

Today, sustainability takes many forms and is present in many contexts, ranging from economic and social sustainability to material and ecological sustainability. Each one has its own value, yet they all converge in a shared goal: creating true value through impact.

Indeed, this is precisely what sustainability helps us to do: create value for the farmer through impact by being an all-round partner for the long term. A partner who understands the realities of daily life and the challenges of the future.

Sustainability is a guiding principle for our organisation. It’s no coincidence that it is not only one of the three pillars of our vision – a sustainable, profitable, and enjoyable future in farming – but also the very first of the three. Even back in 1948, my father and uncle understood that sustainability and sustainable entrepreneurship are decisive for a farmer’s success.
